  • Author: Hailey
  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: Serves 6-8 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

This Freaky Fruit Platter is a spooky and fun Halloween-themed snack featuring creatively decorated bananas, tangerines, apples, lychees, and grapes. Each fruit is transformed into creepy characters like mummy bananas, pumpkin tangerines, fang apples, lychee eyeballs, and grape snakes, perfect for parties or a healthy festive treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Chocolate and Decorations

  • 70g white chocolate, plus extra for sticking on the eyeballs
  • eyeball cake decorations or black writing icing or edible ink pen
  • black writing icing or edible ink pen, or eyeball cake decorations

Fruit

  • 3 small bananas, peeled and cut in half crosswise
  • 6 small tangerines, peeled
  • 1 red apple, cored and cut into 6 wedges
  • 425g can lychees in juice, drained
  • 150g blueberries
  • 250g black and green grapes

Extras

  • small piece of celery
  • 2 tbsp nut butter (we used almond)
  • 25g yogurt-coated raisins
  • short wooden skewers

Instructions

  1. Prepare the mummy bananas: Melt the white chocolate in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water or in 20-second microwave bursts until smooth. Allow it to cool to room temperature. Place the banana halves on a tray lined with baking parchment and drizzle the chocolate over them in a criss-cross pattern to resemble bandages. Attach eyeball cake decorations or draw eyes with black icing or edible ink pen. Chill for about 30 minutes until set. Note they may start to discolor after 2 hours.
  2. Make the tangerine pumpkins: Cut tiny stalk shapes from the celery piece. Push these into the top of each peeled tangerine where the segments meet to mimic pumpkin stalks.
  3. Create the apple fangs: For each apple wedge, cut a small wedge from the peel side to form lips. Fill the ‘mouth’ with nut butter, then press yogurt-coated raisins into it to look like wonky teeth.
  4. Assemble the lychee eyeballs: Stuff each drained lychee cavity with a blueberry. Attach eyeball cake decorations onto the blueberry using some melted white chocolate from step 1, or skewer the fruit together. These can be added to a punch bowl if desired.
  5. Construct the grape snakes: Thread alternating black and green grapes onto short wooden skewers. Attach eyeball decorations with white chocolate as in step 4 to complete the snake eyes.
  6. Arrange the platter: Artfully place all the decorated fruits on a large serving platter, filling gaps with any leftover blueberries. Optionally add spooky Halloween figures or decorations to enhance the theme.

Notes

  • Use yogurt-coated raisins for a fun candy-like appearance on apple fangs.
  • Banana decorations should be consumed within 2 hours after chilling to avoid discoloration.
  • You can substitute almond butter with other nut or seed butters to suit dietary preferences.
  • Eyeball cake decorations can be replaced with edible ink marker drawings if unavailable.
  • Ensure white chocolate is cooled before drizzling to maintain the drizzled bandage effect on bananas.
  • This platter works great as a centerpiece for Halloween parties and is visually appealing to children.
